On-call Responsibilities

ResidentsResidents take call for a week at a time and cover both CUMC and the VAMC.  The number of weeks required is determined by the total number of weeks that "call" is required and is divided by the total number of residents (presently every 10 weeks). This generally means four to six weeks of call per resident per year. There is a CP and AP faculty assigned as back up. Call activities are monitored and feedback regarding decisions is given to the resident either at the time or at the daily morning report.  Graduated responsibility is accomplished throughout the training process and is based on resident confidence in the decision-making process.  Staff members are always available for consultation and are always supportive of the resident. Call is taken from home; all residents have pagers and pass a cell phone among themselves.
